DIY Hairspray

Sometimes a girl needs hairspray. As a devoted hippie, I’ve tried to avoid it completely. Using aloe vera gel as styling gel works, but can get flaky. Several years ago I found a recipe – basically sugar water – that I love and it works. I still don’t use it often, but in a pinch, there are options! FYI: you will not get pursued by bees (as long as you don’t add lemon) or hummingbirds when using…

  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 cup hot distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (optional)
  • 3-5 drops essential oil (optional)

Heat water in a saucepan to just under a boil and dissolve sugar in the hot water. Let cool and add rubbing alcohol (if using) and essential oils (if using). Pour into a fine mist spray bottle and you’re good to go.

This recipe is so easy and inexpensive, and if you’re sure to use distilled water and add rubbing alcohol, it will last a few months at least.
